—Whelk, talking to Ronan and Gansey before Latin class
The Virginia Playboy (former)
Mr. Whelk (father)
Biography[edit | edit source]
While enrolled at Aglionby, Barrington Whelk enlisted the help of his best friend and roommate Noah Czerny to help awaken the Ley Line that runs beneath Henrietta. It started out a whimsical treasure hunt, but the search came to a standstill when Whelk realised a sacrifice was needed to access the line's power.
Then, Whelk's father was arrested for unethical business practices and income tax invasion; his company had been trading with war criminals. Whelk was stripped of his Aglionby enrolment, inheritance, and relieved of his material possessions, including his car.
Reeling from tremendous losses, Whelk made a final bid to complete the ritual. He sacrificed Noah, killing him with a skateboard blow to the side of the head. The sacrifice failed and he left Noah's body in the woods. He continued his search for years, though he did not confide in anyone else.
Seven years later, Barrington started working as a Latin teacher at Aglionby.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Whelk remembered his high school self as popular; a "have it all," with money and a girlfriend. As a twenty-something, he saw himself as the personification of a quarter-life crisis and his magical obsessions. He believed he could become enormously rich if he could control the ley line, and reclaim his old life back.
Whelk's favourite activities included drinking himself into oblivion, stealing from his students, eating dry hamburgers, feeling sorry for himself, and enjoying the southern gothic aesthetic of payphones.
Physical description[edit | edit source]
He had short black hair and disproportionately large features that made him look younger than he really was.
